Lopez wins Nevada Student Speaking Competition

University of Nevada, Reno MBA student Juan Lopez won the Nevada Student Speaking Competition on Oct. 1. He spoke about “understanding, accepting, and embracing your ‘stutter.’” Lopez won a spot in TEDx University of Nevada on Jan. 23, 2015, and is featured in this week’s Nevada Sagebrush.

Want more talks like this? Seven University of Nevada, Reno students will compete tomorrow for a spot in TEDx University of Nevada.

The seven finalists will face off during the Nevada Student Speaker Competition at 6 p.m. at the Joe Crowley Student Union. Topics range from healthy communities to stuttering. The winner will advance to TEDx University of Nevada on Jan. 23, 2015.

Ozmen Center to stream weekly 1 Million Cups event

Calling University of Nevada, Reno students, faculty and staff — RSVP for the inaugural 1 Million Cups Reno (1MC Reno) livecast from 9-10 a.m. tomorrow at the Ozmen Center for Entrepreneurship (OCE). Coffee and scones for tomorrow’s event are sponsored by Coffeebar. The OCE will livecast 1MC Reno every Wednesday.

1MC Reno, as well as other 1MC events in communities around the world, strives to support entrepreneurship. The weekly event gives local entrepreneurs an opportunity to talk to an audience consisting of community members, mentors and fellow entrepreneurs about their businesses.

Industry experts help businesses sustain

City of Reno, Nevada SBDC and Ozmen Center for Entrepreneurship collaborate

to host a new monthly workshop focused on small businesses

Reno, NV – Reducing the amount of Nevada small business closures is the goal of a new monthly workshop designed to educate business owners on how to assess their venture prior to licensing and launch. According to the U.S. Small Business Administration, about half of all new establishments survive five years or more and about one-third survive 10 years or more.

The workshop, Assess, License and Launch, is a collaboration between the City of Reno and two University of Nevada, Reno College of Business outreach centers – the Nevada Small Business Development Center and the Ozmen Center for Entrepreneurship. The 90-minute, monthly program will be held on the first floor of Reno City Hall from 7:15 to 9 a.m. the second Friday of each month, beginning Friday, Oct. 10. The program is free and open to the public.

Meet the directors

A University of Nevada, Reno faculty member and a graduate student have been selected to head the Ozmen Center for Entrepreneurship (OCE).

Chris Howard, Chief Executive Officer of Reno-based NorthStar Investors, Inc., will act as the OCE director. Kylie Rowe, a Masters of Business Administration student, was recruited to the project after taking Howard’s entrepreneurship class at the University. She is the OCE assistant director.

“I see the Center as introducing entrepreneurship as a career path,” said Rowe, who owns a real estate investment business.

Sierra Nevada Corporation’s Ozmens pledge $5 million for new Center for Entrepreneurship at the University of Nevada, Reno

RENO, Nev. – University of Nevada, Reno alumni Fatih Ozmen ’81 M.S. (electrical engineering) and Eren Ozmen ’85 MBA have pledged $5 million to create a new entrepreneurship center in conjunction with the University’s College of Business.

The Ozmen Center for Entrepreneurship, which opens Sept. 15, will permanently support and significantly enhance programs at the University that develop student entrepreneurial capacities and stimulate the creation of new business ventures. This endeavor will serve as an economic development engine for northern Nevada and will garner national recognition for the state.

“Our goal is that the Ozmen Center for Entrepreneurship expand and nurture an entrepreneurial culture and provide resources for the same both on campus and throughout the community,” said Eren Ozmen, president and CFO of Sierra Nevada Corporation (SNC) and the 2013 College of Business alumnus of the year. “We see the center providing an entrepreneurial ‘hub’ that increases business opportunities and creates a robust exchange of ideas that stimulates job growth and benefits our society.”
